CID - Centre d'innovation et de design
Located in the heart of the Province of Hainaut, a few kilometres from the cities of Mons and Valenciennes, the Grand-Hornu is one of the most beautiful places of the Industrial Revolution.
A former mining complex built between 1810 and 1830 by Henri De Gorge, a French-born captain of industry, Grand-Hornu is a real city project, a unique example of functional urban planning on the European continent at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution.
In 1984, the provincial non-profit organisation Grand-Hornu Images set up its offices there and has since pursued its threefold mission: heritage, tourism and culture. It has placed Grand-Hornu high on the list of major international heritage associations and has developed a cultural programme on the site in order to breathe new life into it and help the public rediscover it in a new light.
The exhibitions presented by the association explore the field of relations between art and industry; design, industrial creation and applied arts hold a privileged place, very close to the spirit of the place and in resonance with the history of the region.
On 1 December 2014, Grand-Hornu Images became the CID - centre for innovation and design in Grand-Hornu. Its ambition is to promote contemporary design through a programme of exhibitions and mediation activities highlighting innovation, experimental research, the emergence of new themes and research horizons in the sectors of design, architecture and applied arts.
Since 2012, it has been listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site along with the sites of Bois-du-Luc, Bois du Cazier and Blegny-Mine: www.sitesminiersmajeursdewallonie.be
