Musée international du carnaval et du masque
The story really began in 1975 when Samuel Glotz opened a museum where European masked traditions could be confronted: the similarities between them were obvious, as was the cultural diversity they represented. Since then, the museum has continued to grow and currently holds almost 10,000 masks and costumes (as well as ritual and festive accessories, musical instruments, puppets and posters). The museum deals with the mask in its many forms: European, Asian, African, Oceanic and American masks, as well as carnival, theatre and ritual masks, and archaeological, ancient and contemporary masks.
The Musée du Masque is developing an abundant activity: permanent and temporary exhibitions - here and elsewhere -, publications, events - including courses and anniversaries -, a documentation centre, etc.
